Zoning and Planning Initiatives - Need to Know!

• Denver Zoo West Entrance

The Zoo initially planned to reopen the west gate in City Park to improve access. Local residents and City Park
Friends & Neighbors (CPFAN) expressed clear opposition, mostly due to increased traffic congestion and
diverting limiting parking available for picnickers, tennis players, etc. The Zoo has paused this pilot plan to
  reevaluate and gather more information.

• 16th Avenue Shared Street and Neighborhood Greenway

DOTI designated East 16th Avenue (from Grant St to the City Park Esplanade) as a temporary "shared street."
Barricades and traffic-calming visual markers were installed to slow down cars and prioritize walkers, runners
and cyclists. Data ultimately showed that walking and biking traffic skyrocketed on warmer days. DOTI
has since removed the temporary physical barriers but has plans to continue traffic calming with a permanent
solution. The long-term concepts have now been integrated with the broader Denver Greenways Master Plan,
where final plans are still being discussed.

• City Park West Side Roadway Redesign

Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) is rolling out a sweeping plan to permanently alter the traffic layout on the
west side of City Park. The goal is to simplify vehicular circulation to increase safety, and to mechanically
separate vehicle space from walking and biking zones. Implementation is tentatively scheduled for late 2026.
